Which serial servers support control signals?

Most hardware Ethernet-to-serial servers can only send data between the application and serial device.  In order to send and receive serial control signals (such as DTR and DCD), a serial server must support the COM Port Control Protocol (RFC 2217).

Many serial-based applications and the devices to which they connect, expect to see hardware control signals just as if they were directly connected to an RS-232 port.  When using these applications and devices, it is imperative that you use a serial server that supports the COM Port Control Protocol.

The following serial servers support the COM Port Control Protocol:

Manufacturer        Model(s)
------------------  ------------
Acksys              Cometh
Atop                GW Series
Axis                2490
B&B Electronics     ESR Series
Comtrol             DeviceMaster RTS
CXR                 TS Series
Cyclades            TS Series, Alterpath ACS
Digi                TS Series

Digital Networks    DECserver, Cserver
GarrettCom          DX Series
Moxa                Nport 5600
MRV                 LX Series
Perle               IOLAN
Precidia            Ether232Plus, iPocket232, Cell232Plus
Rayon               GPORT 104, 108 and 116
SeaLevel            SeaLink Series
Sena                PS, SS and STS Series, LS110
Vizimax, Inc.       RightWON Series

Tactical Software also has a software product called TacServe COM Port Server, which turns a Windows PC with one or more hardware serial ports into an RFC 2217 compliant serial server.

When using a serial server that supports the COM Port Control Protocol, make sure that Serial/IP is set to Telnet mode under Connection Protocol.  The Serial/IP Configuration Wizard will detect and report the presence of the COM Port Control Protocol.  If the Configuration Wizard does not detect the COM Port Control protocol when connecting to one of the above devices, make sure that the serial server is configured correctly to accept this protocol.
