The following steps will allow you to quickly get Serial/IP running. Consult the Serial/IP User Guide if you get stuck on any of the steps below for more detailed installation and configuration information.
0. Make sure that your serial server is
configured to share out its COM ports to a TCP port and that your
serial device is connected to it.
1. Running the Serial/IP setup progam:
- Log onto the machine as an administrator
- Run the Serial/IP setup program, select all the defaults
- Leave the license key blank for a free 30-day evaluation or enter your permanent license key.
2. After the installation completes, the Select Ports window will appear.
Select one or more virtual COM ports that you wish to create on your
PC, then click OK. Windows 9x users will have to reboot the PC after
this step.
3. In the Serial/IP Control Panel, enter the IP address of the serial server and the TCP port number that it shares out its COM ports on.
4. If your serial server requires authentication:
- Check the Use Credentials box in the Serial/IP Control Panel and select "Use Credentials Below" in the drop-down list.
- Enter the username and password to access the serial server.
5. Click the Configuration Wizard button and then click Start.
- When the Configuration Wizard completes successfully, click the Use Settings button.
- The Connection Protocol and Application Compatibility settings in Serial/IP will now be correct.
6. In your serial application's settings:
- Change the COM port that the program uses to the virtual COM port that you created in step 2.
7. Now you should be able to access this serial server's COM ports with your application.
