Tech Note: Unattended Installation

Port Selection During Install

Prior to version 4.2, the Tactical Control Panel ran immediately after the install, and would always prompt for the COM port selection immediately thereafter. If the Control Panel detected that there were a set of COM ports redirected from a previous installation, those COM ports were automatically selected for the user.

For version 4.2, this behavior accounts for the possibility that an unattended install was performed.  This is summarized on the following table:

Install Kit All COM Ports Available Some COM Ports Unavailable No COM Ports Defined
Unattended Install Control Panel silently restores COM ports to operation then exits. Control Panel displays warning that some ports are not available and to contact system administrator for assistance, then displays port selection dialog followed by main window. Control Panel prompts for port selection, and displays main window when done.
Normal Install Control Panel silently restores COM ports to operation then displays main window. Control Panel prompts for port selection, and displays main window when done. Control Panel prompts for port selection, and displays main window when done.
Admin-Only Install by Non-Administrator Control Panel silently restores COM ports to operation then exits. Control Panel displays warning that some ports are not available and to contact system administrator for assistance, then exits. Control Panel displays warning that no ports are available and to contact system administrator for assistance, then exits.
